Adjusting to a new home

Be prepared to see some stress behaviors for up to 3 to 4 months after adopting your Keeshond. Since we typically don't know all the trauma the dog might have experienced, it may take several months for your Keeshond to exhibit the characteristic stable happy temperament. Expect to see some depression in the first few months.

Take your Kees outside every 2 to 3 hours for the first few weeks. Even a house trained dog may have accidents from the stress of changing homes. Take him to an area of your yard that you want him to use, and praise him when he uses it.

Food

Feed your keeshond once or twice a day at the same time each day. While in foster care your keeshond was fed ____________________________. If you are using another brand of food, mix the two brands for several days. Add a small amount of the new brand in the first feeding. Increase the amount of the new brand until they only get the new brand of food. We recommend that you do not allow your keeshond to feed all day long. If your keeshond does not finish his food in 15 minutes, pick up the remaining food and feed him again at his next regular meal time.

Recommended brands: ProPlan, Breeders Choice, Walthams, Nature's Recipe, Pedigree
Avoid grocery store dog foods

Heartworm

Heart worm disease is caused by worms living in the heart and in the major arteries of the lungs. They can grow up to 14 inches in length and cause permanent heart and lung damage and even death. Heartworm disease is transmitted by mosquitoes and can be found all across the United States. While the treatment of the disease is risky, prevention is safe and easy. Your veterinarian will can prescribe heartworm preventative. This preventative is a pill you give your dog once a month. If your dog won't take the pill easily, cover it with cheese or peanut butter. All Keeshond Rescues dogs have been tested for heartworm and receive heartworm preventative. Your keeshond has receiving _________________________ on the _____ of the month

Grooming

Keeshonds need to be brushed out at least once a week and have their nails cut every month

Exercise

Training

Keeshonds do not take a heavy hand when correcting. Spanking, electric shock, and slapping will not work! Use the tone of your voice, a scruff shake, and eye contact for dominance. Consistency is critical! Don't allow your Keeshond to do something one day, then scold him the next day for the same behavior. Be consistent in use of commands. For instance, use "OFF" for training your dog to get off furniture then use "DOWN" as a command to lie down. If you don't want your Kees to jump on you or others when you are dressed up, don't allow him to jump on you when wearing jeans. He can't tell the difference. If you don't want your Keeshond on the furniture don't ever let him on the furniture. Make sure all family members know and use the same commands consistently to minimize confusion and mixed messages to your dog.

Go to obedience school with your keeshond. Besides learning commands and manors, your keeshond will learn that you are boss. It is also an excellent bonding opportunity. Be sure you chose a trainer that uses positive reinforcement technics.

Fleas and ticks

Protect your Keeshond against fleas. Today their are two types of products your veterinarian can perscribe. One type is a pill that makes adult fleas infertile, but does not kill them. The second type is a topical liquid that you place on the back of their neck and it kills the adult fleas.

Veterinarian

Take your Kees to your vet within the first two weeks to establish his medical care. Your dog will ne
